Pope Francis called on young economists and entrepreneurs to promote economic models for the world after the pandemic that include the poor.
In a video message broadcast to a conclave of young Catholics in Assisi, the pontiff said that the worst response by the end of the pandemic would be “to fall even deeper into feverish consumerism and selfish self-preservation.”
Instead, Francis insisted, the poor should be invited to participate in the debate on creating “a different economic narrative.”
Production systems and consumption patterns must change to be more sustainable, he added.
The future, he pointed out, must be “a time that reminds us that we are not condemned to sustain economic models whose interest is limited to immediate profit and that are dedicated only to lucrative public policies regardless of their human, social and environmental consequences.”
During the pandemic, the pope has lamented that the most marginalized have been the most affected by the disease.
In his message, the pontiff affirmed that more must be done than “meet the most basic needs of our brothers and sisters. We have to structurally accept that the poor have sufficient dignity to participate in our meetings and discussions and to bring bread to their own tables ”.
Such a strategy goes beyond giving subsidies to the poor, Francisco insisted.
“We are talking about a conversion and a transformation of our priorities and the place that others occupy in our policies and in the social order,” said the pontiff, who also asked to discard economic models that are based solely on profit.
