These numbers make you think. To date, over 10,700 people in Switzerland have been infected with the corona virus. And these are only the cases that have been confirmed by tests. Although the number of confirmed infections in Italy is almost 70,000, it is significantly higher, but compared to the size of the population, Switzerland is now more affected by the corona virus than our southern neighbor.
As the website corona-data.ch shows, 12.4 people per 10,000 inhabitants in Switzerland are now infected with the virus called Sars-CoV-2 and thus contracted Covid-19. In Italy there are 11.4, in Spain 8.5 and in Germany 3.9 per 10,000 inhabitants.
A higher infection rate than Switzerland has due to the small population and the concentration of the population in a few metropolitan areas such as Luxembourg or Iceland. The Vatican and San Marino are also ahead of Switzerland.
Almost every tenth patient dies in Italy
When it comes to mortality – the number of deaths compared to the total number of known infections – the roles are distributed differently: Italy has almost ten percent more fatalities than Switzerland. Statistically speaking, out of 100 corona patients in Switzerland die «only» 1.4 infected.
The infection rate is also only of limited significance because the number depends on how many tests a country actually carries out. Because a high number of tests carried out automatically results in an increased infection rate. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends testing as many people as possible. According to Daniel Koch, 50,000 samples were tested in Switzerland by the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) by Friday last week.
Emirates test the most
In terms of the number of tests carried out, Switzerland is doing well in international comparison, like statistics from the UK Oxford University shows: In Switzerland, as in South Korea or Norway, well over 5000 tests were performed per million inhabitants. South Korea has been internationally recognized for its approach.
The tests are being pushed ahead at full speed in Switzerland. “We will soon reach the number of 10,000 tests per million inhabitants,” said Health Minister Alain Berset on Wednesday. This makes Switzerland one of the countries where the most tests are carried out.
The leader is the United Arab Emirates with over 12,700 tests per million inhabitants. According to data from March 20, Italy only carried out just under 3,500 tests per million inhabitants.
690 new coronavirus cases were reported in Switzerland on Wednesday. 152 infected people have been killed nationwide since the pandemic began.
