Who develops immunity to Covid-19 after being infected? What does the immune response to the disease look like? How long does one stay protected? Crucial questions to which the New york times, in this long, somewhat disjointed but interesting article, tries to offer some answers. If the basic immune response to infection is known – it takes a few days to produce neutralizing antibodies – the duration of that immunity and how effective it is remains unknown. It could last 1 to 3 years, as for benign coronaviruses (common colds), or 8 to 10 years, as is the case in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) from 2002-2003.

Why are we talking to you about it? Knowing the immune response to Covid-19 is essential. In the short term, because immunized people can safely interact with infected patients, which would be precious for the health professions. In the longer term, because controlling the epidemic largely depends on the development of group immunity – which can only be “natural” in the absence of vaccines. The identification of people with a strong immune response finally makes it possible to treat serious patients by injection of antibodies (even if this path is fraught with pitfalls). The development of serological tests, capable of detecting anti-Sars-CoV-2 antibodies in the blood, is a crucial step to see more clearly on these subjects.
