It is still too early for Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) to decide on easing the measures imposed due to the spread of the corona virus in Germany. There is still an increase in new infections, said Merkel in the evening in a press conference broadcast on the Internet. She therefore had to “really ask the people in Germany for patience”. Because the goal must be not to overload health systems.
Given an incubation period of up to 14 days, it could not yet be assessed whether the previous measures had worked, Merkel said after a video conference with the EU heads of state and government. “That is why we are not yet in the area to see whether these measures will work.”
A week ago, schools and daycare centers in Germany were largely closed. Other public facilities, such as clubs, have also closed, and many shops and restaurants are now closed. Since Monday, contacts of more than two people in public spaces have also been prohibited. The calls for an exit strategy are growing louder from the economy.
