National goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen refuses to extend the contract

The goalkeeper and FC Barcelona are divided over the terms of the extension – and ter Stegen apparently has special reasons for his position.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been playing for FC Barcelona since 2014, becoming a world-class goalkeeper for the Catalans. The 27-year-old is the great support in the star ensemble around Lionel Messi, has often saved the club in great need, and received special applause from the spoiled spectators at Camp Nou. Nickname: “Messi with gloves”.

But now there is apparently potential for conflict between the goalkeeper and Barca: Because ter Stegen is said to have rejected an offer by the club to extend the contract. The current contract runs until 2022, Barcelona wanted to extend it until 2024. This reports the Spanish “sport”. According to the DFB goalkeeper has rejected a salary increase of 6.5 million euros. The reasons: he wanted to be top earner behind the striker stars around Messi, Suarez and Griezmann – and he resented that the club had already extended with other players with significantly less time.

In the club management, however, one is aware of the importance of continuing to bind ter Stegen to the club in the long term. The former Gladbacher is considered almost irreplaceable, as there is currently no nearly equivalent replacement. Management is now working on an improved offer.
