The Covid-19 epidemic continues its steady progression in Switzerland. A thousand additional cases compared to the previous day were announced Thursday by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), bringing the total to 10,714 confirmed cases. The death toll reached 161, said the FOPH in a press release. A Keystone-ATS count based on cantonal indications brings this total to 170.

“Currently, 10,714 cases have been tested positive, which is 1002 more than yesterday. (…) To date, 91,400 tests have been carried out, of which 14% were positive, ”further specifies the FOPH, which is based on the declarations received from laboratories and doctors until morning. This is why the figures may diverge from those communicated the same day by the cantons.

The age of laboratory-confirmed cases ranges from 0 to 102 years, with a median age of 52 years (50% of cases are younger and 50% are older than this age). With regard to the distribution by sex, 49% of the cases concern men, 51% of women.

Adults are significantly more affected than children. In adults 60 and over, men are more affected than women, and in adults under 50, women are more affected than men. The cantons of Ticino (392.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Vaud (294.2) and Basel-City (292.1) remain the most affected by the epidemic.

No population monitoring

At a press conference in Bern, the head of communicable diseases of the FOPH Daniel Koch again warned against any hasty conclusion concerning these daily figures. There are big fluctuations from day to day. The FOPH is watching trends over a longer period.

The government has also already announced that it will detect crowds via mobile phones to verify that its anti-Covid-19 recommendations are being implemented. Daniel Koch reiterated that there was no question of monitoring the population. There will be no real-time reading, the data will be used retrospectively and will only concern public spaces.

Nor is there any question of knowingly exposing people to the disease to strengthen their immunity. It would be ethically unthinkable, he said. Even people who are not in the vulnerable categories can be seriously ill.

Asked about mask needs, Daniel Koch also indicated that Switzerland currently requires one to two million protective masks per day. (ats / nxp)
