Spanish football is suffering the brunt of the coronavirus – BERNAT ARMANGUE / AP / SIPA

Until the coronavirus pandemic ends, the
Spanish football is implementing exceptional measures to overcome the health crisis. It is in this context that the federation has released 500 million euros to help Spanish clubs affected by the effects of the said crisis.

“We have worked towards funding of 500 million euros for the first and second division clubs. Those who need between 15 and 20 million euros now will be able to have them, and repay them in five or six years, “announced RFEF president Luis Rubiales on Wednesday, among other measures to help the fight against the pandemic.

“We are reaching out to professional football. We have discussed with the financial entities. If La Liga (the organization that manages professional football in Spain) wants it, we will look for solutions. Now is the time to join forces. (…) Because if the season does not end before June 30, which is more than likely from now on, certain clubs will not receive 100% of the revenues from TV rights which were intended for them, “said Luis Rubiales.

The lower rungs and futsal also helped

In addition to this aid to professional clubs in the first and second divisions, the RFEF announced a series of measures intended for amateur or semi-professional clubs. The first and second futsal clubs for men and women, as well as the Segunda B and the 3rd male division (equivalents of the 3rd and 4th divisions) “will be able to benefit from a credit up to a maximum height of 4 million euros , depending on their payroll, ”detailed Rubiales. A zero-interest loan repayable within two years, he said.

These measures were adopted while some clubs in Spain, such as Cartagena (D3), are using short-time working plans to counter the effects of the health crisis and the lack of income.

No resumption date

In addition, the president of the RFEF reaffirmed again that the federation wishes that the season can “come to an end” but that it “does not fix a date of resumption for the moment”. She also wants the final of the King’s Cup (Spanish national cup), initially scheduled for April 18 in Seville then postponed, to be contested “in front of the public”.

“The hotel of the federation (public hotel in Las Rozas, which hosts the selections in competition time) is available to the authorities to do what they want,” concluded Rubiales.
