Elections in the canton of Geneva
In Geneva, Red-Green clearly won the second ballot for the Council of States. Lisa Mazzone (Green) and Carlo Sommaruga (SP) are the winners. The bourgeois Entente of FDP and CVP failed with the attempt to break through the dominance of red-green.
Mazzone made the best result with 45,998 votes. Sommaruga finished second best with 41,839 votes on Sunday in the second round of the race for the two places in the Council of States.
Hugues Hiltpold (FDP) received 27,297 votes and Beatrice Hirsch (CVP) received 22,960 votes. The two candidates of the bourgeois Entente could not catch up to the red-green duo in the second ballot, they lacked the support of the SVP. In addition, after the affair involving the Geneva FDP Council of State Pierre Maudet and Geneva's CVP City Council Guillaume Barazzone, they may have suffered from the lack of support from their own camps and low mobilization in the bourgeois camp.
