Australia: 27-year-old Australian boxer dies after being shot

Australian boxer Dwight Ritchie died Saturday in Melbourne at the age of 27 after a blow in training while serving as sparring partner for his compatriot Michael Zerafa, announced his promoter.

"It is with great sadness and shock that I must announce the death today of" Fighting Cowboy "Dwight Ritchie, who died doing what he loved," said Australian boxing promoter Jake. Ellis on Facebook.

Ritchie, who was boxing in the super-welterweight category (19 wins, 2 losses), returned to his corner and collapsed after a body shot during a training session with Zerafa, 27, according to the Sydney's Daily Telegraph. He could not be revived, reports the Australian newspaper. Zerafa chose Ritchie to prepare for a new duel with Australian Jeff Horn, former WBO World Welterweight Champion.
