Ramy Bensebaini (20) and the strong Herrmann with a brace (22/59) scored the goals for coach Marco Rose's team. Schalke summer held a penalty by Davy Klaassen (53). Both Borussia veteran Herrmann and Sommer were first fathers a few days ago. The yellow-red card against Bensebaini (87./featured) and the conceding goal by Leonardo Bittencourt (90. + 3) did not cloud the cheering mood.

Gladbach thus won seven of the past eight games and continues to write record numbers: Borussia recorded 25 points after eleven games 32 years ago last time, five consecutive games in a row, the club since the championship season 1976/1977 no longer. Bremer, who have not won since seven matches, fell back to 14th.
The Borussia started the game knowing that they would keep first place in the event of defeat. The route was still clear early: After just 38 seconds Marcus Thuram pushed the ball just past the gate – but the flag of the linesman was up.

After the lively start a game of patience developed. The Borussia ran the ball, but found no means against the Werder defense, in which had to be replaced shortly before kick-off the injured Omer Toprak by Sebastian Langkamp. Bremen, however, continued to take pin-pricks with counterattacks. A free kick by strong Milot Rashica narrowly missed the target (15 ').
A double strike brought the comfortable leadership to Borussia. Only Bensebaini headed for a free kick from Laszlo Benes head to the spot, just two minutes later Herrmann lifted the ball over the outspoken goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka into the goal. The cheering of the 28-year-old was particularly emotional, just two days before, wife Sandra son Leonard was born.
Shortly after the break, the video evidence had to serve again, this time referee Tobias Stieler (Hamburg) decided on penalty for Werder. Klaassen kicked off – and failed to Sommer, who parried a penalty only for the second time in the Bundesliga. After Herrmann's second goal, the fans sang "German champion only becomes VfL". Downside were but two injuries: Both World Champion Christoph Kramer and Laszlo Benes had struck off the field.
