In his first defense, Herring retained the belt on another very significant weekend for him: Veterans Day and the Marine Corps birthday when he beat mandatory challenger Lamont Roach Jr to 7,412 people in the main Top Rank Boxing event on the ESPN + billboard on Saturday night in Fresno, at California's Chukchansi Park, home of the Fresno Grizzlies, a Triple A subsidiary of the Washington Nationals.

Herring, a left-handed man, who beat Masayuki Ito to win his 130-pound world title on May 25, survived big problems in round 11 and held on to win 117-111, 117-111 and 115-113.

Herring (21-2, 10 KOs), 34, of Coram, New York, who earned $ 300,000 for $ 100,000 from Roach Jr, was busy with his jab and body attack, but Roach, a backlash striker, was constantly looking for a opening that never came. He barely threw punches while Herring dictated the fight from the outside.

Roach (19-1-1, 7 KOs), 24, of Washington, D.C., shook Herring with a right in the seventh round, but shots like that were few and far between. After the round, assistant coach Joel Diaz was on him, shouting that the way he was fighting was not what they had trained for.

Roach had another good round in the eighth. He caught Herring with a right hand and left a hook behind that landed solidly. Another hook later in the round made Herring lose his balance.

Herring connected a right in the ninth round that knocked down Roach, but referee Marcos Rosales described it as an inexplicably slip even though the repetitions showed a blow. California does not use the use of repetition to change a call during the fight.

At the beginning of round 11, Roach shook Herring with a left hook on his chin, but did not follow up to see if he was injured. But later, in the last seconds of the round he nailed Herring with a right that shook him badly, but the round ended before Roach could throw another blow.

"I won the title on Memorial Day weekend and defended it on Veterans Day weekend, so it definitely means a lot to all our troops that defend our country and are still in danger," he said Herring “This is for them. I could not lose on our weekend. It means a lot to remain a world champion, ”he added.

On the same Top Rank card, heavyweight Kubrat Pulev took a unanimous, broad decision on Rydell Booker, with cards in his favor of 98-92, 99-91 and 98-92 to retain the mandatory challenger position for go for the belt of the International Boxing Federation currently held by Andy Ruiz.
