Havana.- Diabetes is a disease that concerns the family for their responsibility in the care and prevention of this disease that afflicts 425 million people in the world, said Ileydis Iglesias Marichal, director of the National Institute of Endocrinology (INEN) .

The specialist drew attention to the importance of maintaining healthy nutrition habits and the practice of physical exercises in prevention, as well as the role of the family in accompanying the patient to achieve control goals and improve their quality of life.
Iglesias told the ACN that due to its incidence, diabetes mellitus is considered a catastrophe for health and it is predicted that by 2030 the figure will amount to 522 million.
This problem is aggravated by the fact that one in two people with diabetes is undiagnosed, according to figures from the World Health Organization, therefore, the treatment and control of the disease is complicated.
He added that more than one million children and adolescents in the world suffer from type 1 diabetes, however type 2 diabetes that was always considered an adult disease, is now also present at the earliest ages due to the increase in Obesity and sedentary lifestyle.
Cuba does not escape this health panorama, he emphasized, and in 2018 there were 723,056 dispensed patients although specialists presuppose the existence of a greater number of citizens living with the condition and are not diagnosed.
Regarding the celebration on November 14 of World Diabetes Day, established since 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the doctor stressed that Cuba has a free and accessible health system for the entire population and a national program aimed at addressing the disease and, above all, at preventing it.
There are Diabetic Care Centers (CAD) in all provinces except in Mayabeque, a territory where they are working for their creation because it is next to Havana and Sancti Spiritus the region with the highest incidence in Cuba, added the doctor.
Norlando Orlandi, head of the CAD of the Institute, explained that in the areas of health the integral consultation of the diabetic is coordinated with the presence of specialists among which those of internal medicine and psychologists stand out.
Among the strengths of the Cuban Health System in dealing with this epidemic are 350 endocrinologists, who constitute the largest number of specialists in Latin America, and have the best glycemic control according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), despite the limitations imposed by the blockade for access to insulin and other necessary medications in the treatment of diabetics.
Diabetes mellitus is the eighth cause of death in Cuba and in recent years there is an increase in this condition in adolescents, related to sedentary lifestyle that causes the use of information and communication technologies, although the highest prevalence continues in people over 60 years.
The national act for the date will be the next day 14 in the Mariana Grajales park, in the capital, where students and doctors will perform actions with the risk groups.
