DActress and photographer Valentine Monnier has also turned to French President Brigitte Macron for rape allegations against star director Roman Polanski. Monnier had briefed France's First Lady in two letters in 2018 and 2019 about the charges against Polanski, as Brigitte Macron's office announced on Saturday. In both cases the letters were forwarded to members of the French Government.
In a first letter from last year, Monnier complained that she had received no reply to a letter to Secretary of State for Equality Marlene Schiappa. Macron's office responded that the First Lady could not interfere with the decisions of the judiciary. The letter had been forwarded to Schiappa.
This year, Monnier once again wrote to Brigitte Macron in connection with the financing of a new Polanski strip by the Ministry of Culture. Also in this time, the office of the President's wife had responded and forwarded the letter to Culture Minister Franck Riester.
Polanski had "extremely violent" raped her
Schiappa responded in March to the allegations raised by Monnier. She welcomed the fact that the former model broke his silence after 42 years, but stressed that the work-up was a matter for the judiciary.
Monnier had made the accusations public on Friday in an interview with the newspaper "Le Parisien". She accused Polanski of raping her "extremely violently" in 1975 at his home in the Swiss ski resort of Gstaad. He forced the then 18-year-old "to do all kinds of things".
Monnier claimed to have told her best friend and a later companion of the director of the alleged incident. Both were also in the house on the night the rape was said to have taken place. The two women confirmed Monnier's version to the newspaper. Polanski's lawyer, however, firmly rejected the accusation.
"I believe her"
The actress Adele Haenel, who a few days ago had raised abuse allegations against the director Christophe Ruggia, called on Saturday to support Monnier. "I believe her," she said.
French-born star director and Holocaust survivor Polanski has been wanted for decades in the United States for raping a minor. In 1977 he had sex with then-13-year-old Samantha Geimer, a year later he fled the United States.
