Standard was beaten by FC Malines (1-2) in the final game of the 15th day of the Belgian league on Sunday night. The Malinwa, irreproachable in the organization and devilishly effective, has won thanks to goals from Rob Schoofs and Igor De Camargo. Defeated for the first time this season at Sclessin, Standard dropped to second place in La Gantoise and saw Mechelen come back to it (27).
The summary of the match
The Standard, with no less than six changes from his victory in extremis against Frankfurt (2-1) Thursday in the Europa League, challenged Mechelen who had to do without Nikola Storm, groin injury during the last training.
The Kakkers opened the score 15 minutes on a beautiful free kick from Schoofs (0-1, 15th). The Liege tried to react but Obbi Oulare saw two of his heads go over the goal defended by Yannick Thoelen (24th, 35th). Samuel Bastien also tried his luck but his shot found the fists of Thoelen (40th). Mechelen, perfectly organized in the middle and dangerous thanks to the vivacity of Dante Vanzeir, confirmed his team status difficult to maneuver.
Forced to reverse the trend, Michel Preud'homme started the second half with Renaud Emond instead of Aleksandar Boljevic. But it is Mechelen who has created a big opportunity with Igor De Camargo, former Standard player, whose resumption of volley hit the cross Arnaud Bodart (48).
A seemingly innocuous center found Corryn who deviated to De Camargo. Alone in the rectangle, the attacker shot a helpless Bodart (0-2, 66th). Back to the wall, the coach from Liege withdrew Mergim Vojvoda to launch Mehdi Carcela.
It is also Carcela who, thanks to a good dribble, found Maxime Lestienne near the big rectangle. But Lestienne, who was called by Roberto Martinez at the Devils, saw his shot from the right take flight (75th).
Selim Amallah, just out of the game, gave hope to Sclessin's audience by narrowing the gap with a nice curling shot (1-2, 86th). He also believed in an equalizer but the goal of Amallah, marked involuntarily hand, was logically canceled.
Despite a tumultuous final, Mechelen won, winning his first victory at Sclessin since January 28, 1991.
In the standings, Standard missed the opportunity to return to three points of the leader of Bruges (33 pts), beaten for the first time this season Sunday at Antwerp (2-1). The Liege also lost second place, now occupied by La Gantoise (28 pts) after his first win outside of the season in Genk (0-2).
The facts of the match
15th. While the Standard is more and more pressing, it is Mechelen who opens the mark on a free kick. The latter is perfectly kicked by Schoofs: the shot overcomes the wall and deceives Bodart. First Malinois sending and first goal.
25th. Largest Liege opportunity of the first half hour of play. It is signed Oulare. His recovery of the head, following a corner kick, however does not fly. In fact, the ball goes over the goal.
35th. New opportunity for Oulare, this time following a center of the left. The striker wins his duel but stings his head too much. Thus, the ball bounces heavily on the ground before spinning over Thoelen's cage.
40th. Bastien's powerful strike that is threatening. The doorman visitor is attentive and pushes this first shot square of the premises.
48th. Great effort on the left of Tainmont whose deviated center arrives in the feet of De Camargo who tries his luck. The ball ends up on the crossbar.
65th. While Standard takes risks, a long balloon is diverted to De Camargo. Any profit for the former striker Rouches who makes the break in favor of realistic Malinois.
75th. Carcela makes the show by playing with her direct opponent. Its center is perfect for Lestienne who, in an ideal position, magnifies completely the conclusion of this limpid movement by sending the ball in the tribune.
86th. Three minutes after entering the game, Amallah is decisive. His strike is as powerful as precise. The Standard returns to 1-2.
90th. Amallah equalizes. But the VAR intervenes because the luxury joker touched the ball with the hand before making the difference.
