Team principal Franco Foda is close to qualifying for EURO 2020 with Austria. "But nothing has yet been achieved," warns the German and explains why the party scandal of Hinteregger was even good for the OFB team.
After defeats against Poland and Israel at the beginning of the quali the train towards the EURO seemed to have already left without the OFB. Foda himself was also heavily criticized. "I have lived in Austria for a long time and know that there are often only black or white, because everything is very result-oriented, so that was not a big problem for me," says the 53-year-old. "I've never doubted our work or the team, remember that I had to restructure the team – there were resignations, I had a lot of boys, we played different systems, we wanted to be more flexible it always small setbacks. "
A key experience, according to Foda, was the suspension of Martin Hinteregger, after he celebrated his birthday before the game in Poland too much. "We handled the case calmly internally, which shows that the team has matured," says Foda. "I was impressed by how close the team came and also supported Martin, because every human being makes mistakes, and I believe that has once again welded us together a bit."
