In 1966 there was a competition, a company and most importantly, a car, which put the United States, for the first time, on the stage of world motor racing. After the attempt to buy the Enzo Ferrari empire failed, Henry Ford II He declared war and Ford Total Performance was born. Legends of motor racing like Carroll Shelby, Ken Miles, Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon took advantage of the occasion and led the campaign.

The result was the birth of the legendary Ford GT Mark II. The battle was planned for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1966, considered one of the most prestigious races in the world. Ferrari was dethroned when Ford dominated the track to achieve the first American victory in the 24 hours of Le Mans.

He chassis P / 1046, from Shelby-American piloted by New Zealanders Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, won the prestigious race. The P1046 was removed from the competition shortly after winning at Le Mans and went through a lot of hands and restorations. In 2014, Robert Kauffman, owner of RK Motors bought the car. The vehicle went through an extensive restoration at the hands of Rare Drive in New Hampshire.

More from Le Mans:

On the 50th anniversary of the historic victory, the P / 1046 chassis was in the 24 hours of Le Mans 2016, when Ford won again. The story continues in November 2019 with the premiere of the movie Le Mans '66, starring Matt Damos and Christian Bale.

To celebrate, the P / 1046 chassis moved to Los Angeles for the premiere of the movie. As if it were a star, the legendary car shared the red carpet with the actors and technicians of the film. The legacy of one of the great car racing stories is still alive.
