The young American Devin Haney (20) has retained his WBC lightweight title, beating Dominican Alfredo Santiago in points on Saturday in Los Angeles. He won unanimously three judges, each giving him the same score of 120-107.
Haney, undefeated in 24 fights (including 15 wins before the limit), had been declared WBC lightweight champion, after the title was vacated by Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko.
On Saturday, he came close to signing the 16th K.O of his career, sending Santiago down from a legal uppercut at the end of the fifth round. But the Dominican got up, while the referee had counted to eight, then he held until the end.
