An open investigation after the discovery of drug bails on the Atlantic coast

The prosecutor's office in Rennes announced the opening of an investigation Sunday after the discovery of bales of narcotics including cocaine, stranded on the beaches of the Atlantic coast, and the police called for vigilance.

The gendarmerie launched "a message of vigilance to individuals who would discover such bales on the coast" and invited them to call immediately on 17 without touching these products.

Since November 4, "suspicious packages have been found on all beaches of the Atlantic coast from the Loire-Atlantique to the Landes," says the floor of Rennes in a statement.

Several points of discovery

"Initial analyzes, it appears that these failed packages are in fact bales containing narcotics, especially cocaine with a high degree of purity", and "therefore particularly dangerous," says the prosecutor's office Rennes.

"To date, a very significant amount of narcotics has been recovered" and "given the large number of discovery points", the Interregional Specialized Jurisdiction (Jirs) of Rennes was seized Friday to "centralize research initially carried out locally by the parquets of Saint-Nazaire, Bordeaux or Dax ".

In Gironde, walkers have discovered since Thursday packages of cocaine on the beaches of La Teste and Arcachon, in the basin of Arcachon. It is about "important quantities", according to the parquet floor of Bordeaux.

"At the mercy of the tides"

A source close to the case described to AFP bales that arrived "sparingly" for a month along the Atlantic side, from the Loire-Atlantique, to the Basque country, through the Vendee or the Gironde. They arrive "at the mercy of the tides," said the source.

"The contents and the container can be dangerous for the health", argue the gendarmes. These bales may present a risk "to touch" or cause "fumes".

Alert the authorities in case of discovery

The parquet floor of Rennes also recalls that "any discovery must be immediately brought to the attention of the police or gendarmerie without any manipulation".

Carrying this type of product is an offense punishable by 10 years imprisonment.

"Because of the specificities of this case, the investigation was entrusted by the parquet of Rennes to the Research Section of the Maritime Gendarmerie, the group of Gendarmerie of the Pays de la Loire region and the Central Office for the repression of the illicit traffic of narcotics, working in concert ", specifies the parquet floor of Rennes.
