Liverpool has won the summit meeting of the English Premier League. The "Reds" defeated champions Manchester City 3-1 on Sunday before their home crowd. Still unbeaten in the league, the Champions League winner, who has been waiting for almost 30 years for a league title, goes with eight points ahead of Leicester and Chelsea and nine on ManCity in the international break.
Fabinho (6), Mohamed Salah (13) and Sadio Mane (51) scored in the entertaining match at Anfield for the efficient hosts. After just a few minutes, ManCity called a hand penalty as Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold touched the ball in the penalty area. But the match continued and Liverpool took the lead in the direct return with the first chance.
The guests, with Claudio Bravo in the goal for the injured Ederson, were defensively vulnerable and were unsuccessful in the attack. The defending champions had plenty of chances, but especially Sergio Aguero narrowly missed the goal. The goal of Bernardo Silva (78) came too late for the team of coach Pep Guardiola, who although the pressure in the final phase, although again significantly increased, but was unsuccessful.
Manchester City drew their third defeat of the season and have been waiting 16 years for a championship victory at Liverpool's Anfield. Liverpool are well on their way to their first league title since 1990. Eight-point lead is a considerable difference, especially considering that the Liverpool have only scored 19 points in the recent 50 Premier League rounds.
