Until now, the BMW X1 dominated, from a distance, the market of premium compact SUVs on the Old Continent. But since the renewal of its main competitor, the Audi Q3, early 2019, the gap is narrowing.

Given the record sales volumes, BMW had no interest in upsetting the design of its star. The beans are more massive while the spotlights are now LED. The silhouette of the German is more compact and the shoulder more marked. There is an evolution in the design of the "single frame" grille with reduced dimensions and with a honeycomb style.
Practical aspects: the Q3, best host
In the cockpit, many differences appear between the Q3 and the X1 and the recent restyling of the BMW SUV does not change anything in the matter against this second generation of Q3. Aboard the SUV rings, we take advantage of a dashboard incorporating a traditional organization of Audi models with a touch screen multimedia display facing the driver, a digital instrumentation and a very straight dashboard design. The dashboard X1 is much less successful, much more rustic, including the instrumentation block, which is a thousand miles from that of his rival. We are very far from the image that can be made of BMW, especially when we know the presentation of the sedans of the brand. It's a shame because the quality of the materials is at the rendezvous and is even superior to that of the Audi.
For dimensions, the Q3 is 4.48 m long, about ten centimeters longer than the older generation and this has a direct impact on the practical aspects. The brand rings has particularly worked in this area, as evidenced by the load volume oscillating between 530 and 675 liters thanks to the standard presence of a sliding bench, while this accessory is optional on the X1. Its trunk is larger than the X1, which reaches 505 liters with the sliding bench. But that's not all. To complete this, the Q3 also offers more storage and a larger loading surface (184 cm against 177 cm). Finally, he pushes the nail with a better habitability and a maximum length of loading, whether for the knee space or the internal width.
The budget may seem like a futile question when you buy a premium SUV costing almost € 40,000, but it is important for those who do not want to ruin themselves, but also for the fleet managers who are keen to this kind of models. Here, the X1 dominates the Q3 of the head and shoulders. Its only flaw: a priori discount a little more than the Q3. But for the rest, he is superior in all or almost. First, it is cheaper to buy around € 2,500 with motorization and equivalent finishes.
Its overall reliability is better, its engine is a timing chain without need of replacement during the life of the car (when the Q3 will require the replacement of its timing belt), its consumption is lower by half a liter every 100 km , and its better efficiency earned him a much lower penalty (neutral malus against € 70 for the Q3 *). In the end, the X1 is even cheaper, if one takes into account the said penalty. Finally, we note that both models are set back to back on the warranty period, which remains fairly basic, with 2 years unlimited mileage. Many brands, however, generalists do better on this chapter.
The Q3 is KO, and the X1 largely ahead for the budget to use.
