AMD Radeon Pro 5000M: Apple gets special 7nm GPUs

Apple has plenty of praise for the new graphics chip unit in the MacBook Pro with 16-inch screen. "The AMD Radeon Pro 5000M Series delivers the highest graphics performance in a MacBook Pro ever," the company adds – adding that the new base model is "more than twice as fast as the base model of the previous generation." So you can play UHD videos "smoothly and render faster". For tasks such as color correction in DaVinci Resolve, there is a version with 8 instead of 4 GB of GDDR6 graphics memory – it is "up to 80 percent faster than Radeon Pro Vega 20".

Many details of the Radeon Pro 5000M series did not exist at first – Apple is the first notebook manufacturer to install the new AMD GPU. However, in a press release published on Wednesday evening, the graphics specialist does provide some background information.

Choose from the Radeon Pro 5500M and Radeon Pro 5300M. Both are the first dedicated 7nm mobile GPUs for professional users, according to AMD. The GPU Navi 14 with RDNA architecture is used. Thanks to GDDR6, the memory bandwidth is up to 192 GB per second via the 128-bit memory interface – thus doubling the bandwidth of GDDR5.

The FP32 maximum performance (single-precision floating point) reaches 4.0 TFLOPS in the Radeon Pro 5500M, the Radeon Pro 5300M can do up to 3.2. The faster graphics chip gets as the first model, the full expansion of the Navi-14 GPU with 24 Compute Units or 1536 shader cores, as new is the variant with 20 Compute Units respectively 1280 shader cores in the Radeon Pro 5300M.

AMD sees the 5000M series as the professional equivalent of the new RX 5500 series, unveiled in October. Striking are the significantly lower GPU clock frequencies in the Pro Series, which should benefit the power consumption. Game GPUs for "notebooks from other manufacturers" are expected later this quarter – they get then the Radeon RX 5500M and Radeon RX 5300M, which are weaker than the same Pro models.

Apple installed the Radeon Pro 5300M with 4 GB in the base model of the new 16-inch MacBook Pro. For the Radeon Pro 5500M with 4 GB you pay 120 euros extra, for the Radeon Pro 5500M with 8 GB 240 euros.
