The Dutch cyclist Annemiek Van Vleuten has achieved her first victory with the Movistar jersey by winning the Belgian classic Through Flanders disputed over 122.2 kilometers starting and finishing in Waregem.
Van Vleuten, 38, triple world champion and European gold in 2020, was the fastest in her sprint duel with the Polish Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-Sram), with whom she shared a getaway that was born 30 kilometers from the finish line. The third place was awarded to the American Alexis Ryan (Canyon-Sram).
The star signing of the women’s Movistar launched the sprint about 300 meters from the finish line and could not be neutralized by Niewiadoma.
With the arrival of the group Alexis Ryan solved the sprint for third place. Annemiek van Vleuten succeeds her compatriot Ellen van Dijk, victorious in the last two editions in 2018 and 2019. Last season the race was suspended due to the pandemic.
