In 2020 there were at least 1,606 registered attacks on refugees in Germany, 201 people were injured. This means that the number has decreased slightly compared to 2019.
OSNABRÜCK taz | In 2020 there were at least 1,606 attacks on refugees and asylum seekers in Germany. This emerges from a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a small question from the Left Group, from which the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Tuesday edition) quotes. 201 people were injured in the attacks.
Compared to the previous year, the number of attacks recorded fell slightly; in 2019, the authorities reported 1,620 such cases. The figures for 2020 are preliminary, however. According to the newspaper report, the Left still expects the numbers to rise due to late reports.
“The racism in the country knows no lockdown,” said left domestic politician Ulla Jelpke of the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. The figures showed how solidified right-wing extremist violence is in Germany: “The memory of the racist murders in Hanau a year ago reminded us that it has deadly potential,” Jelpke emphasized.
The attack statistics include, among other things, insults, sedition, damage to property and acts of violence. In addition, a total of 67 attacks on aid organizations and volunteers were reported for 2020.
According to statistics, the number of right-wing extremist marches increased in the corona year: After 124 such rallies in 2019, there had been 133 of them in 2020. According to the report, the number of participants in the marches fell from more than 19,800 to 14,000.
