The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) detained a man suspected of killing four people during attempted robberies in neighborhoods in Maputo province, the corporation source said on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old man is suspected of murdering three housekeepers and the owner of a workshop during attempted home theft in the past three months in the neighborhoods of Matola and Boane, said Afonso Ruco, commander of the Belulane police station, in Maputo province, cited by the private channel STV.
During his raids, the police said, the suspect also allegedly assaulted four other people, including a child, who was seriously injured after being hit several times with a stick on the head, using blunt instruments.
The man, who confessed to the crimes, was arrested on Tuesday after trying to break into a new residence in Matola, where he left a deadly victim and two wounded, the PRM said.
According to Afonso Ruco, the indicted man has been detained several times in South Africa and returned to Mozambique, his homeland, after benefiting from a reprieve announced by the South African executive in the context of the response to the covid-19 pandemic.
