- Humor and special effects are the ingredients of this fantasy in which appears the best of African-American actresses and actors.
Eddie Murphy is back! A prince in New York 2 by Craig Brewer, available from Friday on Amazon Prime Video, shows the actor still got the fish. He finds his character of future sovereign, created in 1988 under the direction of John Landis for new comical adventures.
“The interest in finding the characters after so many years is that they have had time to evolve,” says the director in the film’s press kit. The king played by Eddie Murphy returns to New York with his right arm (still played by Arsenio Hall). Their mission? Find the heir to the throne that the prince has lost sight of for years.
A host of African-American actors
Jermaine Fowler (notably noticed in the excellent comedy Sorry to Bother You) brings a welcome dynamism to the character of the offspring who discovers Zamunda, this imaginary African kingdom over which he should reign. His arrival will make sparks, since he will have to understand the rules and the rivalries of this new universe. Humor and tenderness are on the program thanks to a beautiful troupe made up of wonderful African-American performers among whom we recognize Leslie Jones, Kiki Lane, Tracy Morgan, James Earl Jones and Wesley Snipes at their best.
One of the great pleasures ofA prince in New York 2 is to revisit the makeovers of Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. Makeup by Mike Marino, a magician noted for his work on The Irishman by Martin Scorsese et The Dead Don’t Die by Jim Jarmusch, are breathtaking. We see the actors transform in turn into barber, old man or man of the Church. Magic and laughter guaranteed!
