Government respects citizens’ right to protest / We officially have an extremist party in the Romanian Parliament

Lucian Alecu

Deputy Prime Minister Dan Barna said on Tuesday that he respects the right of citizens to protest, but what happened a night ago at protests in several cities in the country shows that we have an extremist party in parliament.

“There are two very important plans for the discussion. On the one hand, the right of citizens to protest, and it is a right that we respect, is a natural right. I myself and many of the current government have protested in recent years to what the Liviu Dragnea government meant and all those abuses of democracy that I fined at the time. So, there is nothing to say about this right to protest, “Dan Barna told Digi 24.

Regarding the second plan, that of “hooligan, extremist, fascist manifestations”, Barna said that the Government will show “zero tolerance”.

“We officially have an extremist party in the Romanian Parliament, which has assumed these protests and that part of those who demonstrated, who consider it legitimate to threaten Maia Morgenstern, go to the mayor of Timisoara home and shout repertoire fascist, outrageous and unacceptable. Those who went, revoltingly, almost made me sick, in the courtyard of the Hospital in Brasov, shouting at doctors and ambulances: “assassins”, those people are hooligans, those people are from the extremism area, from the fascism area. And the fact that we could have any tolerance for them is out of the question, “Barna said.

Thousands of people protested across the country against the new restrictions imposed in Romania in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the protesters did not wear protective masks. Several incidents have been reported in the country.

The leaders of the AUR party, led by George Simion, as well as the senator Diana Șoșoacă, excluded from AUR, took part in the protest in Bucharest.
