Today, the German coordinator for transatlantic relations, Peter Bayer, called for the introduction of a moratorium on the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline for the transport of natural gas from Russia to Europe, which separated the opinion from the official position of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government.
– This project represents a serious obstacle for a new beginning in transatlantic relations. Americans expect us not only to change rhetoric, but to let deeds speak. Therefore, I am in favor of a moratorium on the construction of Nord Stream 2 – Bayer, a member of Merkel’s conservatives, said for the weekly WirtschaftsWohe, reports Reuters.
The United States strongly opposes the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, claiming it will increase Europe’s dependence on Russian gas, and US President Joe Biden recently threatened new sanctions on companies involved in the construction.
Berlin had hoped earlier that the US administration under Biden would take a softer stance than the previous Don government, that Trump, primarily because the pipeline is almost complete.
However, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken told Berlin that sanctions against Nord Stream 2 are a real possibility.
Russia and Germany are defending the view that Nord Stream 2, a $ 11 billion venture run by Russia’s state-owned energy company Gazprom, is a purely commercial project.
