Tonight (20:00) Maria Sakkari will face Naomi Ozaka, claiming qualification for the semifinals of the Miami Open. This will be the fifth match at WTA level between them and the 23-year-old Japanese champion, No. 2 in the world rankings, leads the series 3-1.
Their last match was in 2020 in Brisbane, where Osaka won 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3, with the Greek champion having its only victory (6-3,7-6) in 2018, in Cincinnati.
Osaka, speaking on the WTA website, stressed that the fight for the top of the rankings is not her priority. However, if Barty does not qualify for the final, Osaka will return to the top if they win the title in Miami.
“I understand how important it is and what an honor it would be to be No. 1, but for me, I realize my mind is not working well if I keep thinking about all the things that could happen, so now I just think I’m playing this tournament. “Every round I play is against a very tough opponent,” said Osaka, who plays like Sakkari for the first time in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. He has not lost yet this year, although he retired before the WTA Gippsland Trophy semifinal against Elise Mertens.
