Portuguese construction workers removed from Mozambique after terrorist attack – Africa

The workers at Construções Gabriel Couto, from Vila Nova de Famalicão, were evacuated from Palma, in northern Mozambique, after the Daesh terrorist attack.

“All our collaborators, both expatriates and nationals, after the terrorist attack that took place last week, were initially withdrawn to Pemba, by sea, following the expatriates to Maputo, while the nationals were taken to the various places of origin, where they are already safe with their family members “, says the construction company in a statement.

The company adds that its facilities to support a gas project were not destroyed in the terrorist attack. “Our shipyards are located inside DUAT, that is, inside the perimeter of the gas project intervention, where Total’s shipyard and the main companies that collaborate in this project are located. These facilities are guarded, either by the army of Mozambique, or for the private security of Total and the different operators. There was never an attack on the site “, he explains.

In February 2019, a Mozambican worker at the Portuguese construction company was killed by armed men in Cabo Delgado. In last week’s attack in Palma, dozens of civilians were killed, according to the Mozambican Ministry of Defense.
