Telkom Holds Direct Submarine Cable to the United States – PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk together with Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation Limited (Keppel T&T) and a subsidiary of Facebook Inc. or Facebook will build a submarine cable communication system that connects Indonesia with Singapore and America directly.

“TelkomGroup through PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin) invests in and becomes a member of the Bifrost submarine cable consortium with Facebook and Keppel,” said Telkom’s Director of Wholesale & International Service Dian Rachmawan in a written statement received in Jakarta, Wednesday (31/3/2021) .

According to Dian, TelkomGroup is not just a partner to anchor or a landing party for SKKL Bifrost, but actually invests and has voting rights in the consortium. Even the SKKL segment that anchors in Jakarta is 100 percent owned by Telin.

With this arrangement, it will become a milestone for cooperation between telecommunication operators and OTT (Over The Top) such as Facebook in building telecommunications infrastructure while still paying attention to the interests and sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia in the aspects of security, economy (taxes and PNBP) and maintaining healthy competition in the telecommunications industry.

The submarine cable communication system (SKKL), named Bifrost with a length of more than 15,000 km, is expected to be completed in early 2024. When fully operational, the SKKL Bifrost will become a submarine cable that has high-speed transmission, advanced technology and the latest and has the largest capacity. across the Asia Pacific.

The construction of the SKKL Bifrost also shows TelkomGroup’s commitment to developing digital infrastructure to support the growth of the digital economy in Indonesia.

The presence of SKKL Bifrost is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s global connectivity with a large capacity and the latest technology to meet Indonesia’s enormous internet bandwidth needs, in addition to increasing the reliability of the international submarine cable system, especially for routes to America.

In addition, the SKKL Bifrost has also prepared branching units (BU) towards Balikpapan and Manado which can later be used to anticipate infrastructure needs in the planned new capital city and also in the Eastern Region of Indonesia.

Previously, Telin had also built the Indonesia Global Gateway (IGG) submarine cable and the US SEA cable connecting Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Guam, Hawaii and America. [Antara]
