Tennis: Estoril Open behind closed doors has a player in the world ‘top-10’

The Estoril Open in tennis will count on the participation of the Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the Clube de Tenis do Estoril, between April 24 and May 2, announced today the organization of the Portuguese event of the ATP Tour.

The world number nine, which in October 2020 reached the eighth place in the ATP ranking, will mark its debut in the clay of Estoril, in an edition of a tournament that will take place behind closed doors, due to the restrictions enacted by the Government, following of the pandemic caused by covid-19.

Diego Schwartzman, 28, is qualified for the round of 16 of the Miami Masters 1,000, for the first time in six appearances, having already won this season his fourth title, in 11 finals played in his career, in the ATP 250 of Buenos Aires. The most important trophy, however, was won at the ATP 500 Rio Open in 2018.

Trained by Juan Ignacio Chela, champion of the Estoril Open at Jamor in 2004, Diego Schartzman, who in 2020 was only eliminated in the Roland Garros semi-finals by the Spanish Rafael Nadal, will thus be the sixth Argentine player to try his luck in the dust brick of the only Portuguese ATP event, whose former champions were David Nalbandian (2002 and 2006), Juan Ignacio Chela (2004), Gaston Gáudio (2005), Juan Martin Del Potro (2011 and 2012) and Carlos Berlocq (2014).

“We are very happy to receive Schwartzman for the first time. He is an extraordinary player, who last year managed to reach the semi-finals of Roland Garros, only losing to Nadal. Everyone likes to watch him play, for his spectacular tennis, and he is one of the lowest tennis players on the circuit and that proves that men do not measure up, ”described João Zilhão, director of the Estoril Open, in statements to the Lusa agency. .

In addition to Schwartzman, the Estoril Open will put four more players in the ‘top 20’ of the world hierarchy into action, the Frenchman Gael Monfils, 14th in the ‘ranking’ ATP, the Spaniard and champion in the Estoril CT in 2017, Pablo Carreño Busta (15th ATP), the Italian Fabio Fognini (17th ATP), the Chilean Cristian Garin (20th ATP).

Of the first 80, the French Ugo Humbert (30th), Benoit Paire (33rd), Jeremy Chardy (49th) and Richard Gasquet (50th and champion in 2015) will also be at the Estoril CT. Serbian Filip Krajinovic (35), Kazakh Alexander Bublik (44), Spaniards Albert Ramos Vinolas (47), Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (55), Pablo Andujar (61) and Fernando Verdasco ( 72), South African Lloyd Harris (52), Briton Cameron Norrie (56), North American Frances Tiafoe (58) and Australian Jordan Thompson (60).

“We will have five players from the ‘top 20’, it is a record for the Estoril Open, and it shows that the picture is extremely strong. We will also have three champions, Gasquet, Carreno Busta and João Sousa, who make us very happy, as well as the return of Monfils and Fognini is very special. They are two of the most charismatic players on the circuit and are obviously excellent for television audiences, especially in a year when the event will be purely television and digital, ”added the race director.
