Italian police have managed to catch a man in the Caribbean who is reportedly a member of the Calabrian mafia ‘Ndrangheta. The man was betrayed by programs about Italian cuisine, which he had on YouTube, the Italian daily La Repubblica reported. In Portugal, police again caught another member of the Calabrian mafia. Francesco Pelle was on Italy’s list of 30 most wanted criminals.
Fifty-three-year-old Marc Biart has been on the run from the Italian judiciary since 2014, when he was arrested for membership in a mafia organization and drug trafficking. He tried to live a discreet life in the Dominican Republic and had virtually no contact with the local Italian community. But he and his wife conducted a show about Italian cuisine on the Youtube platform. Although he never showed his face in the footage, investigators were attracted by his tattoo, which was clearly visible in the videos. By following digital tracks, police were able to find out where the man lives.
Another prominent mob boss, Francesco Pelle, was detained in Lisbon on Monday. Police tracked him down at a clinic in Lisbon, where he was being treated for COVID-19. Pelle, called Ciccio Pakistan, was one of the thirty most wanted criminals in Italy. He has been on the run from justice since 2019.
Two years ago, the Court of Cassation ruled that Pelle had ordered the failed assassination of another Calabrian Mafia official, Giovanni Nirty. However, the attack failed and Nirt’s wife died during it. According to investigators, this provoked a retaliatory attack in Duisburg, in which six people were murdered in 2007.
According to Italian prosecutors, both cases show the importance of international cooperation in the fight against mafia groups. For example, a man in the Dominican Republic was detained thanks to the Interpol CAN group, which focuses on the international investigation into the activities of the Calabrian ‘Indrangheta in the world.
