The 47th edition of the Vuelta al Algarve, a test of the UCI ProSeries calendar that will be held from May 5 to 9, 2021, will be held over 765.8 kilometers divided into five stages that have been presented this Tuesday.
The race starts in Lagos and ends at the top of Malho, in the municipality of Loul. Two stages will have a high finish, another two are suitable for sprinters and an individual time trial completes the menu.
The inaugural stage be for sprinters, starting in Lagos and ending in Portimo after traveling 189.5 kilometers. The final part of the route, along the coast, promises to offer some beautiful images of the beaches of the Portuguese Algarve.
The second stage It begins in Sagres, Vila do Bispo, and ends at the highest point in the Algarve, Fia, in Monchique, after 182.8 kilometers. The undulating route translates into an accumulated positive slope of 4,100 meters. Three mountain passes in the last 30 kilometers promise to encourage the fight for the general. The finish line is located at a first category stop, the climb from Monchique to Fia (7.5 km with an average difference of 7.3 percent). At 6.2 kilometers from the start of the Fia climb, the runners will pass through Pomba, a second category climb with 3.6 kilometers and an average gradient of 8.2 percent. In the third category is the ascent to Alferce (5.7 km at 6.2 percent), 26.4 kilometers from the finish line.
The arrival at Fia will be the first opportunity for the candidates for the yellow jersey to be seen. On his ramps, in the last three years, the stage winner also won the overall: Michal Kwiatkowski in 2018, Tadej Pogacar in 2019 and Remco Evenepoel in 2020.
In it third day, the sprinters will once again be the protagonists in a stage that begins in Faro, runs through the interior of the Sotavento and the Algarve region to end in the heart of Tavira. It will be the longest stage of the competition, with 203.1 kilometers.
The fourth stage It will be very important to broaden the overall classification. This is the Lagoa time trial, which will have the same 20.3 kilometer route already covered in the last three editions of the race.
The Fifth stage be an obstacle course, a journey of 170.1 kilometers between Albufeira and the top of Malho, in the municipality of Loul, where the goal is located in a second category mountain prize. It has an accumulated unevenness of +3,280 meters, and the last hour of the race resembles that of a classic in the Ardennes, with a series of demanding climbs, before the Malho climb (2.6 kilometers with an average slope of 9 , 2 percent). The rest of the climbs are in Vermelhos (3.2 km at 5.9 percent, 43.1 km from the finish line), Plumeira (1 km at 14 percent, 32.2 km from the finish line) and Alte (2.1 km at 5 percent, 14 km from the end).
