We are going through a period in which we need beauty, seductive stories that will soothe and distract us, and art offers such a refuge.


Instinctively, we look for harmony, fit, comfort, predictability. But it is important to get out of this area to discover new things, to think in unexpected ways, to create. And that’s the challenge of competition glo™ Urban Pairs & Art Flairs. It’s a contest that forces artists to break out of the usual patterns and embrace the concept of Break Binary, says Irina Dragomir, visual artist and juror of the competition,

The glo ™ Urban Pairs & Art Flairs competition proposes to combine two strongly contrasting concepts in a single story, which can be quite a challenge for anyone. It challenges us to expand our thinking universe and evolve, which means that all participants will be winners, no matter what material goods they will receive in the end.

The challenge has been launched, the deadline is tight, the brief is here. We bring for inspiration the life and art stories of the people on the jury and their advice for those who want to participate. Irina wishes the competitors to create with joy, without the pressure of competition and stakes.

Your story of art

My penchant for art has always existed. I guess it’s like a seed you are born with and which, if you cultivate it, blooms beautifully. My oldest memories are of visual stimuli. My first visual passion was a large communist mosaic that still decorates the facade of the House of Culture in Mangalia – my hometown. Still, I’m glad to see him every time I pass by. The list of such memories is very long and even though some time has passed since then, I am satisfied that I managed to keep this fascination and visual joy when I discover something beautiful.

Later, I realized that I, in turn, could create beautiful things – sources of joy for myself and others, and I could not stop, although there were some obstacles along the way that confused me. -they slowed down the artistic path.

The Romanian art public

The Romanian public is very diverse and it would be quite difficult for me to generalize. There are many variables that intervene and shape the interaction between the audience and the artistic object. People appreciate or not the various artistic manifestations depending on their tastes, the personal stories they print in what they see, but also depending on education. The more art you consume, the more sophisticated and pretentious the taste becomes.

There is a tendency of “friendship” between the public and the artist that I find beneficial because it dismantles some myths about artists and because it helps the public to better understand the universe that the artist presents. We are going through a period in which we need beauty, seductive stories to soothe and distract us, and art offers such a refuge. For this reason, I think it is expected that people’s enthusiasm for all artistic manifestations will increase.

How do you see the future

It gives me strength to imagine that one day the sad news will stop, that I will be able to travel again to places full of beauty and that I will spend quality time again – face to face, with all my loved ones. Certainly in the future I will want to regain all the joy I have lost in the last year and I think this is a common plan for most of us. In conclusion, the future excites me.

What are the themes that inspire you now

I have noticed that I am constantly changing from all points of view and that many of my preferences change over time. For example, I had a period when I was very attracted to visual abundance, excess, and realism. Now I’m going through a stage that surprises me too and I’m starting to believe that “less is more”. Moreover, lately, I feel more and more attracted to the freedom that abstraction offers me, and to the clarity of geometric shapes. It seems to me a huge leap for someone like me, who for years has tried to understand and reproduce reality as faithfully as possible. Maybe this pandemic year also influenced my change of vision. Maybe somewhere, unconsciously, I concluded that reality keeps me much too tense and restricted, so I decided to distance myself from it.

I think the best advice I can give to the participating artists is not to put pressure on them and work with joy, without thinking too much about the competition or the stakes. Good vibes only, as much as possible :))
