Many star diets suggest starting our day with a glass of lukewarm, lemon water, as this will speed up our digestion and melt the pounds off us. Does it really work? The dietitian answers!

Kata Horváth, a dietitian at Duna Medical Center, pulls the veil off the myth of lemon water and explains how this morning routine can do more harm than good, if you use it at all – read the article on mindmegette.hu.

Consumption of 2.5-3 liters of fluid per day, including mineral water, is recommended for everyone, as dehydration slows down the metabolism and is harmful to physiological processes. So it is true that the recommended or increased water intake noticeably stimulates digestion and speeds up brain function, has a beneficial effect on blood pressure, and even makes the skin firmer, but it has been proven to work without lemon juice.

How much is that?

The official daily recommended vitamin C intake is 60 mg, whereas 1 slice of lemon juice contains about 1 mg of vitamin C. From this we see that we should drink 60 glasses of lemon water a day to reach the right intake.

The anti-cancer effect of the flavonoids and antioxidants found in lemons is proven, but with a glass of drink containing 1-2 slices of lemon, we can only cover a negligible part of the recommended daily amount, which is very little for the prevention of cancer.

Forget alkalizing as well

Lemon water does not alkalize because the pH of food has no effect on our overall health. With the functioning of our body and organs, it maintains a pH value within optimal limits, which we cannot influence with our food.

Consumption of lemon water cannot prevent diseases such as arthritis – where a purine-poor diet is beneficial, gestational diabetes (GDM), but unfortunately also cancer. Moreover, it is not recommended for people with reflux, high stomach acid, prone to heartburn, and can also damage tooth enamel.

Leave the detoxification to the kidneys!

In our body, this function is perfectly performed by our kidneys and liver. We don’t need any panacea or any cleansing fluid, as we don’t have any poison deposits or “dirty” guts, so we don’t have to detoxify.

Do you start dieting?

Lemon contains pectin, which is also found in apples. It saturates due to its fiber content, so it helps to avoid weight gain and supports the work of the digestive system. However, when squeezed, the lemon already hides a very small amount of fiber. Dietitians consider it more effective in the fight against obesity and recommend consuming several times a day, high-fiber foods such as oats and legumes, in addition to a complete lifestyle change, which of course includes regular exercise.

Is lemon water good for anything at all?

Lemon water is recommended in the articles because if we don’t add sugar to it, it’s an excellent alternative to sweet soft drinks and juices, a glass of which can be high in calories. We want more lemon water, it absorbs itself better than pure water while it contains little calories.

So what is the secret to healthy weight loss?

For healthy weight loss, these keywords should be remembered in the diet: regularity, moderation, variety, high consumption of fiber, vegetables and fruits, lifestyle: balance, two movements a week and restful sleep.
