The GGDs extend their AstraZeneca injection break by at least one day. Also on Friday they will not administer that corona vaccine. 1,274 injection appointments are canceled.
The Ministry of Health has not yet taken a decision on the resumption of vaccinations with the AstraZeneca vaccine. The ministry is waiting for an emergency advice from the Health Council, which will probably arrive tonight (Thursday evening). After that, outgoing minister Hugo de Jonge can make a decision.
It will then be too late to contact all the people who are expected at an injection location on Friday, according to the umbrella organization GGD GHOR Netherlands. He has therefore already decided not to administer AstraZeneca vaccines on Friday either.
On Friday, the ministry decided not to administer the vaccine to people under 60 for the time being. GGD GHOR Nederland then decided to cancel the appointments of people over 60 to prevent waste. The GGDs administer the vaccine to people who work in long-term care.
Relationship between AstraZeneca vaccine and thrombosis
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) concluded on Wednesday that there is likely a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and a rare combination of blood clots (thrombosis) and a reduction in the number of platelets (thrombocytopenia).
The regulator does say that the advantages of the vaccine outweigh the disadvantages. According to the EMA, the chance of dying from COVID-19 is greater than the chance of dying from the said side effect.
The GGDs also administer Pfizer and BioNTech corona vaccines. These vaccinations will continue as usual.
