Olympic Games: Olympic torch relay avoids Osaka due to a state of emergency

2.12 pm: The relay with the Olympic flame must avoid the prefecture of Osaka. The government of the region comparable to a province has decided this because of the increasing number of corona infections. 2.11 pm: The World Cup season for BMX riders starts on May 8 and 9 in Verona, Italy. The international cycling union UCI has designated four weekends in which the cyclists compete for the World Cup. The matches in Verona are still a qualifying moment for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Initially, the season was to start in Stuttgart, but that city gave back the organization due to the strict corona restrictions in Germany.

The Dutch BMXers will also travel to Verona. The Netherlands has three starting tickets for the Games for both men and women. Cycling Federation KNWU nominates the highest ranked BMX rider in the world rankings and designates the other places based on an internal ranking. At the moment, Niek Kimman (sixth) is the driver with the highest ranking for men, Laura Smulders (third) for women.

After the races in Italy, the third and fourth moto will follow on 29 and 30 May in Bogota, Colombia. The KNWU will not send a delegation there. In the last two weekends of October, the World Cup season will be concluded with four match days in Sakarya, Turkey.

Judo: Judo coach Arens is counting on the strongest team at the European Championship

1.37 pm: National coach Maarten Arens of the Dutch judokas is counting on the fact that he will soon be able to send his strongest formation to the mat at the European title fight in Lisbon. A few weeks ago, a few of his athletes became infected with the corona virus at a training camp in Georgia. “For the time being, I assume that we will not make any changes to the formation,” says Arens.

According to him, there is no cause for great concern. “We were in Georgia because a training camp there is very important to us. But we soon found out that the rules were not being observed very well there. We left immediately but were unable to prevent some infections. It’s annoying, but we know that a small risk cannot be ruled out in everything we do. ”

For privacy reasons, Arens does not say who it is. He also cannot indicate whether the athletes in question have now tested negative. In Georgia there were also athletes who go to Lisbon. Arens: „Even if there were to be changes in the selection, do not immediately conclude that it concerns corona. Maybe some athletes make a certain choice, because at other tournaments more points can be obtained for the ranking. But as far as I am concerned, we are going to Lisbon with the intended formation. ”

In Lisbon, according to Arens, it is primarily about Olympic qualification. In three classes, the Dutch still have to decide among themselves who can go to Tokyo. This applies to Sanne van Dijke and Kim Polling (-70 kg), Guusje Steenhuis and Marhinde Verkerk (-78 kg), and Henk Grol and Roy Meyer (+100 kg). Arens: „Lisbon is the last measurement moment. Then the selection committee makes a decision. ”

Preparations went well. Arens: „There are still some minor injuries, but we almost always have them. But we did well in previous grand slams and the Masters in Doha. Last weekend there was still gold for Kim Polling in Turkey. With the help of quick tests, we have been able to train well for a long time, young talents develop well and our top players get medals. For the time being, things are looking good in this Olympic year. ”

Arens himself was missing from the training session in Georgia, as he is recovering from surgery on an inguinal hernia. He is present in Lisbon.
