Manchester City extended Kevin De Bruyne’s contract for two years on Wednesday. The star player is now tied to the leader of the Premier League until mid-2025.
“I am very happy,” says 29-year-old De Bruyne on the City site. “I’ve felt at home since I joined the club in 2015. City gives me everything to be as successful as possible, so this was an easy decision.”
The Belgian switched from Vfl Wolfsburg to City 5.5 years ago for about 76 million euros. The playmaker has developed into one of the most important pawns in manager Josep Guardiola’s team in Manchester.
“Kevin is without a doubt one of the best footballers in the world,” said Technical Director Txiki Begiristain. “That is why this is a very important moment for Manchester City.”
De Bruyne is on 255 official matches for City, in which he was good for 65 goals and no less than 105 assists. Last season, the midfielder set a Premier League record by recording 23 assists in the league. Among other things, it earned him the prize for best player in the Premier League.
De Bruyne is aiming for the third title with City
De Bruyne became champion twice with City (2018 and 2019). The Fleming also won the FA Cup once (2019) and the League Cup four times (2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020).
City still has a chance to win four prizes this season. Guardiola’s team is the unthreatened leader in the Premier League, is in the final of the League Cup, in the semi-finals of the FA Cup and won the first game against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the Champions League 2-1 on Tuesday .
