Moscow. Press conference “The significance of the criminal case against public activists of Ingushetia”

April 8, 2021 at 10:00 in the press center of the information agency “Rosbalt” (Moscow, Skatertny pereulok, building 4/2, building 1) a press conference will be held on the social and legal significance of the criminal case against public activists in Ingushetia.

The signing of an agreement between the heads of the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Ingushetia in October 2018 resulted in a rally in the Republic of Ingushetia that lasted for two weeks.

In February 2019, the authorities of the Republic of Ingushetia tried to amend the legislation on referendum and elections, which involved determining the status of the borders of the republic and its name without holding a referendum, which also caused a popular protest, which resulted in a rally held in Magas on March 26, 2019.

And although the rally was approved by the authorities, there were clashes between the protesters and law enforcement agencies, which resulted in the well-known criminal case – the Ingush “swamp” case.

In March 2021, the Kislovodsk City Court changed the preventive measure against Zarifa Sautiyeva from custody to house arrest. However, the court of appeal issued a ruling that returned Sautiyeva to custody, which also served as a catalyst for public outrage.

Other defendants in the case of the rally went on hunger strike and refused to take part in further trials in protest against the detention of Zarifa Sautiyeva. Only on the ninth day the protest action was stopped at the request of the religious leaders of Ingushetia.

Currently, the Kislovodsk City Court continues hearings on the criminal case against the leaders of this protest, who are accused of organizing violence against government officials, as well as committing a number of extremist crimes. The defense believes that the criminal case has political overtones, the accusation is untenable and the defendants are kept in custody solely for reasons of revenge and reprisals for holding protests.

Since the trial is actually closed, the participants in the press conference intend to highlight the progress of the trial and discuss:

– what the prosecution’s arguments are based on;

– the physical condition of the elders in custody;

– testimony of witnesses against the “organizers of the rally”.

The press conference is attended by:

– Karina Moskalenko, lawyer;

– Lev Ponamorev, political and public figure;

– Nikolay Svanidze, journalist;

– Bagaudin Nalgiev, member of the Council of Teips of Ingushetia;

– Daria Kornilova, journalist.
