Romania continues to vaccinate with AstraZeneca for all age groups

Romania will continue vaccination with AstraZeneca, for all age categories, said the coordinator of the vaccination campaign, doctor Valeriu Gheorghiță.

The announcement comes after the presentation of the EMA conclusions which established a link between the administration of the vaccine produced by AstraZeneca and the rare adverse events of blood clots.

Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, on December 27, 2020, 2,180,807 people have been vaccinated against COVID in Romania, of which 392,269 have been vaccinated with AstraZeneca.

“The EMA has decided that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks of these possible side effects. The EMA made it clear that no risk factors were identified for gender or age, which is why the conditions of use were not restricted. In Romania, the situation is worrying, with over 4,500 cases of COVID-19 daily. For every 100 people diagnosed, 2.5% die. As claimed by the EMA, the disease is associated with the risk of hospitalization, death. Post-vaccination thrombotic effects are very rare, the benefits outweigh the risks. Given the epidemiological context, vaccination with all vaccines continues in Romania. Timing of vaccination can lead to severe forms of the disease and can compromise the achievement of group immunity. EMA experts monitor all reported adverse events, each Member State reporting all these effects centrally. At today’s meeting it was decided: vaccination with AstraZeneca will continue for all age groups. Those who made the first dose, continue the booster with the same type of vaccine. Those with thrombosis after the first dose, continue vaccination with another type of vaccine. What side effects can occur in the first 14 days after the administration of the vaccine and which should cause the person to go to the hospital: certain neurological symptoms, intense headache or the appearance of small blood stains, “said Valeriu Gheorghiță.
